MJC Students Protest Police Militarization
If you walked by the Student Center on the East Campus between 1:00pm an 2:00pm, you notice the group of students holding a silent protesting. This group of around 35 students from the Black Student Union, Pirates for Liberty, MECHA, and Red Nations Club were protesting against general Police Militarization.
“It’s the Vicious Cycle of the Taxpayer paying for weapons for the Department of Defense to the Military, then to the government. After that it goes the Department of Justice, the police, and then gets pointed back at the taxpayer. Any time you can get one person to think about a cause any protest is a success”
Stated Jose Alvarez who organized the event. These students have been fed up in general with the growing number of police departments becoming more of a military force then a police department. This protest was based on the recent events of Ferguson Missouri, however, it was protesting the general transformation of police to military operations. Students held signs and did not speak during this silent protest. These protesters were helped by a fire drill that cause hundreds of students to walk out the student center next to the protesting students.
