2014 MJC Women’s Soccer Outlook

The 2014 MJC Women’s Soccer team is poised for a great season behind Coach Steve Aristotelous, strong returning sophomores, and a great incoming class of freshmen.
Last season Modesto finished 10-7-4 and lost in the first round of the playoffs to Foothill College. Last years team only had five sophomores and almost all the teams starters are returning for the 2014 season. Returners include; Gabby Acosta, Marissa Rouse, Danielle Nava, and Alexis Steele. Aristotelous on returners from last year’s team:
“We have 9-10 returners, we were a young team last year, and all returners were starters last season”
“That is one of the biggest challenges this year, there is not going to be a cut starting lineup, because we have 9-10 incoming freshmen this year that we think could be starting. This team this year is going to be responsible for minutes on the field whether the first 20 or the last 20 , they (the team) needs to understand that starting is going to be irrelevant for this team, they need to produce for the unit. Starting is overrated for this team, I could start 18 different players.
The Pirates have unbelievable depth that will give them an excellent chance to win the Big 8 and make a run in the playoffs.
“Every two or three years we make a run and it’s about time to take a run deep in the playoffs. We had a good strong freshmen class we started roughly nine last year that are returning. Our goal is to win a State Championship”
This years team is also poised to win academic awards.
“This team is smart to win the State GPA Academic award. The 2008 team is always the team to beat, they finished 8th in the nation and won the state GPA Academic award. So that where the bar is set, to finish 8th in the nation and beat the team GPA of 3.0 This team has a chance to do both”
Last season, Coach Aristotelous was the head coach for both the MJC men’s and women’s soccer teams. This year, Sebastian Gutierrez is heading up the MJC men’s team and Aristotelous is the head coach of the women’s team. Aristotelous is entering his 14th year of coaching women’s soccer at MJC.
MJC’s first game is on September 2nd against Skyline College in Modesto at 3:00.
