MJC hosts 16 teams for 77th Annual Basketball Tournament
(Modesto, CA) – Modesto Junior College will host the 77th Annual Men’s Basketball Tournament from December 16 through December 20 in the Gymnasium on East Campus. The tournament is an MJC and Modesto community sports tradition, and is one of the longest running tournaments in California.
There will be 16 community college teams competing from around California, including the hosting Pirates. In addition to MJC’s Men’s Basketball Team, community colleges sending teams to the 2014 tournament are Chabot, Allan Hancock, Columbia, Cosumnes River, Cuesta, De Anza, Diablo Valley, Foothill, Fresno City, Lassen, Mendocino, Napa Valley, Ohlone, Sacramento City and Yuba.
Legend’s Night will be held on December 16, when former MJC basketball alums will be recognized during halftime of the 6 p.m. opening contest for MJC. Veterans Night will be held on the busiest day of the tournament, Thursday, December 18, when all Veterans are free for a full slate of eight games beginning with an 8 a.m. tipoff and concluding with a 10 p.m. game. On Friday, December 19, the tournament will be gathering food for the United Samaritans Foundation. Fans who bring two cans of food will receive a $2 discount on admission that day.
Grower Direct Nut Company and the Associated Students of Modesto Junior College (ASMJC) are again sponsoring the tournament.
General admission is $7, senior citizens and students of any age are $4. MJC students showing student ID and children under six years of age are free.
