The MJC Men’s Soccer team is ready for a new season with new head coach Sebastian Gutierrez. Gutierrez has been an assistant coach for MJC Soccer in recent years, as well as coaching track and field at MJC. This is Gutierrez’s first time being a head coach, and he spoke of the challenges of being a first time head coach:
“The biggest thing is all the stuff behind the scenes, paper work, I have been learning a lot especially from Steve Aristotelous, and he has been guiding me and doing things the right way. We do things the right way here at MJC, its just a big process managing all that stuff. Managing the guys making sure their all on board and have their classes that’s probably the most challenging thing right now. Training comes easier, that’s the fun part, and they (the team) wants play and shows up to play”
Gutierrez’s goal for the season is to get to playoffs and see the team come together. The Pirates will look to get to the playoffs by getting through Big 8 conference play.
“The Big 8 is the toughest conference in the north, every team is even and every Big 8 game we played last year was very close and we intend it to be the same this year. It is going to be a battle, the Big 8 is tough”
The Men’s team will have many new faces for this 2014 team. Diego Duran is the only returning starter from last year’s heavy sophomore team. This team does feature multiple players that have previously played at MJC before and have taken a year break to focus on academics.
Last year the Pirates lost in the first round of the playoffs to West Valley after going 12-3-5. From last year’s team, Luis Martinez and Diego Godinez will both be playing at UC Merced this year.
MJC will have exhibition game against UC Merced in Merced before starting the season against Contra Costa College in Richmond on September 2nd. They will play their first home game on September 6 against Feather River.
