Tiger Shelton enters his second season of coaching at MJC expecting to expand on last years success. Last season the Pirates were eliminated by Gavilan in the first round of the playoffs in Modesto. Shelton on goals for the season:
“We want to win as many games as we did last years, anything above that would be great, love to make the playoffs, I think we have a great team”
This 2014 volleyball team will feature four returning players from last season including 2013 All-Conference selection Sierrah Miller (pictured).
“All four will start for us this year, Sierrah Miller should have been All-State last season”
Miller led the state in hitting percentage last season. Miller played Shelton’s club team over the summer traveling to Croatia to for the Volleyball Global Challenge in which she played against the Italy National Team. Another notable returners is Shania Williams.
There are eight incoming freshmen to this team this year. A large part of the team’s success this season will depend on the incoming freshmen’s performance. Shelton commented on the overall progress of the team:
“They are doing very well (as a team), progressing well, working hard, they are a good group of kids”
MJC Volleyball will be hosting its annual MJC Classic tournament on August 27th and August 29th. MJC will play a round robin against Yuba and Siskiyous on the 27th starting at 1:00PM.
“We will be finding out what your starting lineups are, I have some ideas and if they work great. We have a lot more options this year, last year we had 8 and this year we have 12”
On Friday, MJC will host West Valley, Porterville, Siskiyous, and Chabot. The games on Friday start at 10:00am and will continue till 6:30pm.
