Football MJC 29 San Francisco 66 October 4th@San Fransisco MJC dropped their second straight as they lose to San Francisco City College (4-1) 66-25. Modesto kept with San Francisco in the first quarter leading 8-7. SF then came back and scored 28 points in the second quarter to lead 35-15. SF never looked back scoring another 31 points in the second half to win. SF running back Jahray Hayes totaled 150 rushing yards with five touchdowns. SF stopped Anthony Cota from running wild, limiting him to only 21 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. He also caught a six yard pass for a touchdown. Cota has rushed for 553 yards in the past three games. Embry Allen Jr. played the majority of the game at quarterback throwing for 135 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. MJC totaled four turnovers and SF fumbled the ball away six times. Adrian Laurel led the Pirates defense with eight tackles with three for a loss. MJC will have a bye week this week to regroup before taking on Sequoias (1-3) on October 18th at Sequoias. Sequoias is in the same league as Modesto in the National Valley. Women's Soccer MJC 2 Santa Rosa 2 October 3rd @Modesto MJC ties with Santa Rosa (6-3-1) 2-2 in a tough battle. Jenna Viss recorded a goal and an assist in the tie. Santa Rosa scored twice in the second half with a free and a shot from 40 feet out, both by Natalia Picano. The pirates are now 10-0-1. MJC will play at Cosumnes River (4-3-4) on October 7th at 3:30PM. Men's Soccer MJC 3 Cosumnes River 4 October 3rd @Cosumnes River MJC falls to Cosumnes River (4-5-1) 3-4. Bruce Ocana, Martin Castorena, and Andres Garcia all scored for the Pirates in the loss. The Pirates are now 4-3-2 and have lost their second straight game. MJC will play Fresno (6-5-1) on October 7th at MJC 4:00PM. Volleyball MJC 1 Sierra 3 October 3rd @Sierra MJC is defeated by Big 8 rival Sierra (4-7) 3-1. The Pirates lost the first two sets 23-25 and 25-21, before winning the third 24-26. They lost the fourth set 25-23 to end the match. MJC is now 9-4 on the year and ranked 23rd in California. Sierra Miller leads the team in kills with 161. MJC's next game is at home against American River on October 8th at 6:30PM. MJC Early Care and Education Laboratory and Parent Participation Program has openings
(Modesto, CA) – Modesto Junior College has a few openings available for preschoolers and their families in the MJC Early Care and Education program in MJC’s dedicated instructional setting on west campus. The Me-Wuk Child Development Laboratory and Parent Participation Preschool is accepting applications for their long-standing program serving preschoolers between 2 and 5 years of age and their families. Children will start in the fall 2014 semester and continue into the spring 2015 semester. Children attend Monday through Friday mornings, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., or Monday through Thursday afternoons, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. The cost for a family/preschooler/family is $15 per day. If admitted, each semester a child is enrolled (fall and spring) one parent/guardian from each family is required to enroll in, attend, and successfully complete a 6-hour parenting class through MJC Community Education. Each semester, families are required to volunteer in the classroom. Applications are available online at www.mjc.edu/instruction/fcs/earlycare and are accepted year round. Applications for the next round of lottery selections are due by August 18th. MJC's Dairy Judging team takes 3rd place at the Wold Dairy Expo in Madison Wisconsin. The Dairy Judging team is comprised of Joya Lemos, A.J. Vaz, Michael Davis, and Mark Vieira. The team is coached by MJC Dairy Science instructor Bill Hobby. They competed against thirteen other colleges in the International Post-Secondary Dairy Cattle Judging Contest on September 29th. Modesto placed 3rd with 2,089 points. Morrisville State College won the event (2,169 points) followed by SUNY Cobleskill (2,104 points). Fellow California School, Merced College placed 4th behind Modesto with 2,042 points. A.J. Vaz finished third high individual with 725 points, only seven points away from placing first. He placed in the top five in every breed. Vaz earned All American by finishing in the top ten. Joya Lemos scored 685 points finishing 12th overall, just four points from finishing in the top ten and earning All American. Lemos earned high Individual in Brown Swiss. This is Lemos's first year Dairy Judging. Mark Vieira placed 14th with 682 points and Micheal Davis placed 23rd. There were a total of 48 individuals in this competition. "Out goal was to have two All Americans and place in the top three high teams" stated Coach Bill Hobby. Continuing to sat: "This was the most difficult contest I have seen in eleven years of coaching, this was huge for us" MJC Dairy Judging team has now placed 3rd, 1st, and 3rd in three competitions this year. Modesto competes in the Post-Secondary division against other Community Colleges from around the country. In the Madison show, a team from South America competed against MJC. MJC has won a total of nine national championships and is know across the country as having one of the best schools for dairy judging. MJC Women's Soccer ranked 4th in the newest Junior College Division III Poll from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. They were previously ranked seventh in the poll last week. Cerritos College topped the poll ranking with the top spot. MJC women's Soccer also ranked sixth in the first 2014 California Community College Rankings that was released early this week. They are tied for first with Fresno City College (7-0-2) in the Northern California Poll. The Pirates are a perfect 9-0 on the year and are tied for first in the Big 8 with Sierra College. Southern California community college, Cerritos college ranked first in the state and are currently on a 18 game winning streak from last season. There are three other Big 8 schools ranked in the Northern California Poll: Sierra, Santa Rosa, and Delta College. MJC defeated Diablo Valley College on September 30th with Marissa Rouse scoring two goals in the first half to secure the win. MJC has averaged 4.6 goals per game totaling 41 goals in nine games. Fourteen different players have scored for the Pirates, with Yaritza Arista leading the team with eight goals an twenty one points. Jenna Viss leads the team with six assists. Goal keeper Elizabeth Amaya has only allowed four goals on the season recording 31 saves and contributed to five shutouts. Fifteen different players have recorded an assist and twenty one players have had at least one point. MJC plays American River at home on October 1st before facing Santa Rosa on October 3rd. MJC Speech and Debate Team wins Sweepstakes Award at Golden Gate Opener
(MODESTO, CA)—The Modesto Junior College Speech & Debate Team won the first place Sweepstakes Award at the Golden Gate Opener held September 26 through Sept. 28 in San Francisco. The Sweepstakes trophy is awarded to the school that accumulates the most individual points over the course of the tournament. MJC students competed in events including parliamentary debate, individual events, and Lincoln-Douglas debate. The partnerships of Ron Thompson/Caterina Grossi and Megan Chatelain/Casey Shoblom represented MJC in the octo-finals and semi-finals of novice parliamentary debate. The students took home awards after only four weeks of practice, rising through the ranks of 26 other teams and debating topics including relations with Ukraine, recent ESPN scandals, and internet nationalization. MJC students also won top awards for their individual events. Extemporaneous speech students, using sources, have thirty minutes to prepare and practice a seven minute speech and Jon Sahlman proved he is a force to be reckoned with, taking first place in the extemporaneous open division. In the Novice division of extemporaneous, Chatelain took home third place and Shoblom earned a finalist award. Chatelain also garnered third place and Grossi earned a finalist award in the novice division of impromptu speaking, in which students have two minutes to prepare a five minute speech based on an unexpected prompt. In the open division of impromptu, Thompson took home a finalist award. Grossi was recognized as the top novice in persuasive while James Baugh achieved second and Sahlman took third place in open persuasive speaking. In novice dramatic interpretation, Rick Morris took third place with a piece that explores the tensions between father and son relationships. Baugh also proved his mettle in open after-dinner speaking, taking home a finalist award for his humorous speech on the Christian left. Sahlman took third place in communication analysis, a speech that critically examines the rhetorical methods of an art campaign about street harassment. MJC had unprecedented success in Lincoln-Douglas debate, in which students use evidence to argue for and against the designated topic. This year, the resolution is about developing earth’s moon for water, minerals, and energy. Students competing in the novice division were Jonathan Van Horn, Morris, Grossi, Chatelain, Shoblom, and Thompson. All six debaters went undefeated with 4-0 records in the preliminary rounds. These students closed out the event and took the top six final awards. Sahlman took home a quarter-finals award and Baugh went on to win a semi-finals award in the open division of Lincoln-Douglas debate. “I’m incredibly proud of the MJC squad,” said Ryan Guy, MJC’s new team coach. “Their work ethic and commitment to each other has shown that they are serious players in the speech and debate community.” The speech team will perform their events at Speech Night on October 7 at 4 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. in the MJC Auditorium. The event is open to the public and tickets available in advance for $5 at the MJC Box Office. Tickets will be $8 on the day of the performance. The MJC team will travel to their next competition at Santa Rosa Junior College on October 10 for “another battle of eloquence, wit, and words,” according to Coach Guy. (Modesto, CA) – Modesto Junior College Agriculture and Environmental Science Division will host the annual MJC Truck and Tractor Pull on Saturday, October 11 in the Agriculture Center for Education Pavilion located on the MJC West Campus at 2201 Blue Gum Avenue in Modesto. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. with pulling starting at 6 p.m. Tickets to this family-oriented event are for sale in advance online at http://mjc.tix.com and by calling the Auditorium Box Office at 575-6776. The Box Office is open Tuesday through Friday, 12 noon to 5 p.m. Tickets are $15 for designated seating, $12 for designated and bleacher seating, and $10 for the standing room only section. The event is again expected to sell out so attendees are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance. Remaining tickets will be for sale on Oct. 11 beginning at 2 p.m. at the ACE Pavilion. All proceeds benefit the MJC Pulling Pirates Truck Pull Club. The plan would use the newly built bike path on the Briggsmore overpass to connect to 9th street and than cut back up Tully to MJC. It would be a 2.3 mile bike and pedestrian path. This is a $700,000 project with most of the money coming from State and Federal Routes to School Funds. The rest of the funds will be from City Hall's plan to repave 9th street. Work would begin on this bike path starting in this spring or summer.

September 26th @Modesto MJC Men’s Soccer wins second in a row defeating Butte (1-5-0) 4-0. The Pirates are 4-1-2 on the year with one win in conference. Modesto had four different goal scorers: Jose Lemus, Bruce Ocana (pictured), Andres Garcia, and Humberto Salcedo. Salcedo now has seven goals to lead the team. Shawn Bassi, Salcedo, Diego Duran, Edgar Lopez all had assists. MJC will face Santa Rosa (4-3-2) in Santa Rosa on September 30th for their second Big 8 match-up. |
